SPIRITUAL
Mark Rothko is known for his abstract expressionism paintings, but he moved through
more traditional styles in his early career, including Surrealist paintings in
the 1940s. In 1947 he embarked on the first of his large abstract 'colour-field'
paintings, formalising their structure further in the 1950s. his work is a must see always best when the gallery is clear of people and silent, these painting are in the Tate Moderns free exhibitions

FINE BALANCE
In the early 1960s, Richard Serra and the Minimalist artists of his generation turned to
unconventional, industrial materials and began to accentuate the physical
properties of their art. Over the years, Serra has expanded his spatial and
temporal approach to sculpture and has focused primarily on large-scale work,
including many site-specific works that engage with a particular architectural,
urban, or landscape setting.

Richard Long artist made his international reputation during the 1970s, but already with
sculptures made as the result of epic walks, these take him through rural and
remote areas in Britain, or as far afield as the plains of Canada, Mongolia and
Bolivia He walks at
different times for different reasons.
